Roaccutane tablets contain Isotretinoin as the active ingredient. Isotretinoin is part of a class of medications known as retinoids, which are derived from vitamin A. When taken orally, Isotretinoin functions by decreasing the production of the skin's natural oil, known as sebum.

Acne is caused by an overproduction of sebum from overly active sebaceous glands in the skin. The excess sebum can block these glands, preventing the oil from being released and leading to a buildup beneath the skin. The bacteria linked to acne thrive in these circumstances, as they consume the sebum and generate waste products and fatty acids that irritate the sebaceous glands, leading to inflammation and the formation of spots.

Roaccutane reduces both the size and activity of the sebaceous glands, which lowers sebum production. This helps prevent gland blockage and makes it less likely for bacteria to thrive. Additionally, it mitigates inflammation in the skin.

Roaccutane has the potential for serious side effects, so its use needs to be monitored by a dermatologist. It is specifically intended for treating severe acne (like nodular or conglobate acne or acne that poses a risk of lasting scars) that has not responded to typical treatments, including oral antibiotics and topical medications.

Your acne might worsen initially during treatment, but this generally improves within 7 to 10 days of continued therapy. In many cases, individuals achieve complete or nearly complete resolution of acne after a 12 to 16 week treatment regimen, and you are likely to maintain acne-free skin for an extended period. Further treatment courses are not usually advised unless a clear relapse occurs after stopping. If a repeat course is deemed necessary, it should only begin at least eight weeks after the previous treatment has concluded, as improvement might still occur during that time.

Patients on Roaccutane may experience side effects such as dry skin, headaches, elevated liver enzymes, muscle and joint pain, hair loss, visual disturbances, eye surface inflammation, nausea, inflammatory bowel disease, and bone disorders.
